When I.M Pei designed the pyramid at the Louvre and placed it in the center of the courtyard it disturbed him that the Great Axis of Paris did not terminate cleanly, so he had this statue of Louis XIV recast and placed it at the end point. Stand at the base and you see all the way past Concorde and the Arc de Triomphe to the Grand Arch at La Defense.
